My name is Sonja and my husband Kevin and I live in a restored thatched farmhouse. I am originally from East St Kilda in Melbourne, Australia and Kevin is from North County Dublin. Our restoration of the farmhouse fueled our interest in the vernacular buildings of Ireland and more recently the tower houses of the 15th and 16th century.

Since 2003, our increased interest in tower houses led us out on countless journeys in search of these ancient ruins with a view to finding the ideal tower house ruin to restore. That search, which was assisted by many like-minded people we had met along the way and numerous Ordnance Survey maps, eventually led us to North Tipperary and the ancient ruin of Tullaun Castle.

In 2007 we purchased Tullaun Castle, with the adjoining lands, off the Costelloe family. In 2010 we obtained planning approval for its restoration. When we first bought the tower there were no floors for two of the main rooms. We have since put in temporary floors (with permission) to facilitate the conservation and restoration work and now every room of the tower can be accessed.

I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to all the people who have helped us along the way. We have met some really wonderful people (thanks Jim!!).

We hope you enjoy reading about the history of Tullaun Castle and joining us on our journey in restoring this ruined building.
