My Soul. I summon to the winding ancient stair;
Set all your mind upon the steep ascent,
Upon the broken, crumbling battlement,
Upon the breathless starlit air,
Upon the star that marks the hidden pole;
Fix every wandering thought upon
That quarter where all thought is done:
Who can distinguish darkness from the soul?

The winding ancient stair...Would you like to be part of Team Tullaun and help us re-write history?
In 2013, we finally took the plunge and started on the exciting project of the restoration of Tullaun Castle. It’s been quite a roller-coaster ride to say the least. We restored the exterior of the castle and repaired all the breaches. Kevin spent six months re-pointing the entire exterior on his own (under the ever-watchful eye of our dog, Tilly). Our plan is also to eventually restore the battlements and render the exterior as it would have been when it was first built but until then, Tullaun Castle’s exterior is now structurally sound again and ready to face another 500 years of time and the elements.

Thanks to the wonderful support we received during our “New Dawn for Tullaun Castle” crowdfunding campaign with Indiegogo in 2014 we were able to commence the restoration of The Great Hall. Kevin again got the repointing tools out and repointed the vaulted ceiling and walls of this beautiful room. The impressive fireplace and windows were repaired. Leadlight windows with stained glass were inserted and then came the numerous coats of whitewash. Last but not least, new beams have been inserted and a proper wooden floor has been recently laid. The Great Hall has now been transformed from a dark, damp, dripping room to a bright, beautiful, uplifting space. We could never have achieved this without the generous support we’ve had from people who believe, like we do, that these ancient, unique buildings deserve a future.

What’s the next step?
We’ve many visitors to Tullaun and the base of the stairs can be quite tricky. In the interest of safety, and to improve our visitors’ experience, more work is required so our next step, pardon the pun, is to repair the deliberate damage done at the base of the spiral stairs (many years ago to prevent cattle access) and to rebuild the breach in the wall adjacent to the stairs. When these repairs have been done, the internal structure will be complete again and Tullaun Castle will be one of the most intact castles in the region.

We’d love you to join us on our quest and be a part of Team Tullaun to make sure Tullaun Castle has a future and together we can re-write history! After all, as a wise man once said, “They ain’t building em no more!”

For your kind support you will receive regular, exclusive “behind the scenes” updates including photos and videos of our progress. You are also invited to visit Tullaun to meet us and, with Tilly as your exuberant guide, see what your support has helped us achieve. Your name will be inscribed in our beautiful Thank You book and posted on the Thank You page on our website. For donations over €25 we will also plant a sapling tree at Tullaun in your honour, which will be tagged with a name of your choice.

I had the greatest pleasure today in meeting the lovely Tilly and Kevin and being awestruck by the amazing work you have both done on restoring this amazing part of our heritage. I’m usually never stuck for words but to say I was blown away by seeing it in person is the understatement of the year. Such a mammoth task and to see it coming back to life is very moving. A huge thanks to Kevin for showing me around and you must be proud as punch of what you have achieved. I look forward to following your progress and visiting again xx” – Gillian Pryor, Dublin
